FatGuppy on Twitter and some other people have been ranting the Lotus Notes Client for webmail, sometimes referred to as iNotes or Domino Web Access, doesn't work.
This is far from the truth.
In accessing my server via the Google "front end client" browser, Chrome, all is well. Now we have an R8.0.1 server and an 8.0.2 server in cluster.
If you are checking it out on an older version of Lotus Domino, say R6, it would not be a surprise to me if you had some issues.
Why? Because you are running software which is at least 3-5 years old.
Google, not Lotus, built Chrome with cutting(bleeding) edge software and respective versions of various code(beta java code for one) and it would not be likely that an old server would recognize any of it.
Having said that, when was the last time you updated your server's java code? Or patched all the Microsoft holes/security items? Or for any other operating system you might run?
Many are so quick to condemn but really I did not have to do anything to get it to run aside form enter a URL.
Thought about making thus a FudBuster #5 but decided it wasn't at that level ...yet.
Anyone with other testing or input please advise.
Don't be an ass. iNotes uses browser sniffing to determine which browser you use and then tries to server different pages for 'supported' browsers. That is *always* a bad strategy. Stick to web standards and you don't have to know which browser is being used. Thats why there are web standards. In case of iNotes 8.5.1: it only works with IE and FireFox (as it states iteself). Can you believe that? No Safari, Opera, Chrome, etc. Sjees!

ReplyDeleteYou are wrong, iNotes does work with the other browsers for most of the client, but some items will not.
It gets better over time.
Should they build it to internet standards, which ones? Ie6,7,8 and FF use different pieces in each version, as do the other browsers.
I know even basic html looks different in each browser from experience so its not an IBM problem, but a general problem with all companies.
Aspects of Lotus Webmail works; however, I'm not looking to access my email in a piecemeal fashion. I'd appreciate the full functionality other browsers enjoy. Chrome is my default browser with FireFox pinch hitting on occasion. Currently, I can view my webmail, but I can't send any outgoing messages, replies or otherwise. This is unacceptable.
ReplyDeleteI do see what you mean in testing it just now, but I also know it did work. so my guess is 851 or 852 broke a piece. I am not an IBMer anymore so not my role, but I will go ask some people and post about it.
