"RCP Base plug-in not found" error Symphony Install

Damn it Jim, I'm an Admin not a developer, stupid RCP error.

This was posted in the Symphony Forum here and I can safely say after clearing 2 pcs with this error, this was the only way to fix it. I had used beta 2 until recently and had issues and was just going to go back and use Lotus Smartsuite which still runs and works(I have that client that uses Approach) when the announcement came out to use beta3. Now I have to reload all my plugins too.

Symphony 1.3 installation issue
Please uninstall Symphony 1.3 from Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs first and then install again.

If you don't see Symphony listed in the Control Panel(OR in my case it would not uninstall), you can use manual uninstall process below.

1 - Close IBM Lotus Symphony if it is running.
2 - Use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove IBM Lotus Symphony. You can download the utility from the following location: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301.
3 - Delete the desktop icon and Start menu item.
4 - If it is running, end the soffice.exe and soffice.bin processes from the Task Manager window, then remove the installation folder, for example, C:\Program Files\IBM\Lotus\Symphony.

The utility in step 2, Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, will appear in your programs list without a folder.

  1. I have done all that, cleaned out the registry, restarted the whole lot, deleted the symphony directory, but still get the error message. Its really annoying IBM should ensure that this does not happen. I can see that it happens a lot and has been for a long time. They just appear to ignore it.

  2. Do not run Firefox at the sametime, make sure sametime or anything else is not runing.
    Run nsd-kill before installing it.
There are a myriad of reasons, each system is unique that way.
But I agree it should be resolved already.

  3. I went through itt all again, even uninstalling Notes. But no. So I though I would wait untill V 3.0 Gold was launched.

We that day has arrived and it still dones not work. I even uninstalled Notes open office etc. Still not work.

IBM should be ashamed of them selves allowing a major problem like this to continue for so long. The only way I can see of making it work is to do a clean install of Windows,as I have a complex system I dont want to do that.

  4. Nick,
The final shipping version did not have these problems for my pc, unlike all the betas.
My guess is you have something open during the install.
    Check the registry well.
And if possible, install the new version into a new directory.
Report the problem tot he symphony team I guess if you still have problems.
OH and do not install symphony as part of Notes that will mess you up too.
